Switch: Resilient Ethernet Protocol simple configuration

One ring as shown in the diagram is considered a segment in Resilient Ethernet Protocol terms.

REP segment characteristics:

1.       Within an operational segment there will be one blocked port for each vlan.

2.       If vlan load-balancing is configured, two ports in the segment control the blocked state of the vlan.

3.       If one or more ports in a segment is not operational i.e. link failure, all traffic will be forwarded to all vlans to ensure connectivity.

4.       If link failure occurs, the blocked ports will transit to open state. Once the failed link recovers, a logical blocked port is selected per vlan.

REP port states:

1.       Fail port: Initial state of the REP port in the segment.

2.       Alternate state: This state blocks the REP port in the segment.

3.       Open state: When a link failure occurs, the alternate port receives the link-failure notification and transit itself to open state to forward all traffics to all vlans.

Simple REP configuration:

An Edge port has to be configured to start the REP operation.

To do vlan load-sharing two edge ports have to be configured.

ME-SW1 configuration:

Interface gi0/1

Switchport mode trunk

Rep segment 100 edge

Interface gi0/2

Switchport mode trunk

Rep segment 100 edge primary

ME-SW2 configuration:

Interface gi0/2

Switchport mode trunk

Rep segment 100

Interface gi0/1

Switchport mode trunk

Rep segment 100

ME-SW3 configuration:

Interface gi0/1

Switchport mode trunk

Rep segment 100

Interface gi0/2

Switchport mode trunk

Rep segment 100
